courage of the Iraqis, who continue to defy those who seem to want to prevent Iraq from moving
forward. This is a strong indication of a true democratic spirit and deserves respect from all. The
Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq (IECI) supported by the UN has once again done a very
good job in preparing these elections under challenging circumstances.

Yesterday’s elections for the new Assembly, the Council of Representatives, in accordance with the
new Constitution, mark a historic turning point for Iraq. This is a new beginning. The EU continues
to support Iraq and the Iraqi people. We look forward to working with the new Assembly and the
new government."
