President Barack Obama created surprise by nominating General Joseph Dunford as Chief of the combined armed forces, replacing General Martin Dempsey. He also nominated General Paul Selva as assistant chief of staff.. Dunford is a general from the Marine Infantry (the « Marines »), whose career has been particularly brilliant. Most notably, he commanded the US and NATO forces in Afghanistan. He seems to enjoy privileged relations with President Obama.

General Paul Selva is from the Air Force, and commanded the « Train » (in other words, military transports) – a strategic weapon in the preparation of conflict.
