While Isis occupies Ramadi, the second city in Iraq, and the day after, Palmyra in central Syria, killing thousands of civilians and forcing tens of thousands to flee, the White House declares, “We cannot pull out our hair each time there is a hitch in the campaign against Isis” (The New York Times, 20 May).

More than 9 months ago, on 8 August 2014, the military campaign, “Inherent Resolve”, was launched in Iraq and Syria by the US and their allies: France, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and others. Had they only used their fighter bombers as they had done against Libya in 2011, the Isis forces, moving in open spaces, would have been easily targeted. Instead they have been able to attack Ramadi with columns of armour vehicles loaded with men and explosives. Has the US been drained of its military might? No. If Isis is making inroads in Iraq and Syria, it is because this is what Washington actually wants.

An official document of the Pentagon Intelligence Agency dated 12 August 2012 confirms this, de-classified on 18 May 2015 through the initiative of a conservative group “Judicial Watch” in the presidential race. [1]. This reports that “Western countries, the Gulf States and Turkey support in Syria oppositional forces that are trying to gain control over the Eastern areas, next to the Western Provinces of Iraq” helping “to create safe havens under international protection”. It is the “possibility of establishing a Salafist principality in Eastern Syria, and that is exactly what the powers that support the opposition want: to isolate the Syrian regime, a strategic rear of Shiite expansion (Iraq and Iran)”. The 2012 document confirms that Isis, whose first cells originate from the war in Libya, was formed in Syria recruiting in particular Sunni militants Salafists that, financed by Saudi Arabia and other monarchies have been supplied with arms through a CIA network (also reported by the New York Times [2] in a report of “Conflict Armament Research”).

This explains the meeting in May 2013 (reported by photographs) between the US senator John McCain, on mission in Syria on behalf of the White House and Ibrahim al-Badri, the “Caliph”, the head of Isis [3]. This also explains why Isis unleashed an offensive in Iraq just when the Shite government distanced itself from Washington, drawing closer to Peking and Moscow.

Washington, discharging the responsibility for the fall of Ramadi onto the Iraqi army, now announces its desire to expedite in Iraq the training and arming of “Sunni tribes”. Iraq is heading in the direction of Yugoslavia, to disintegration, comments the former Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The same in Syria, where the US and its allies continue to train and arm soldiers to bring the government of Damascus down. With the policy of “divide and rule”, Washington continues thus to feed the war that in 25 years, has brought in its wake massacres, exodus and poverty, so much so, that many young people, have made a profession out of arms. A social terrain on which Western powers have made alliances with the monarchies: the “Caliphs” that exploit Islam and the division between the Sunnis and Shiites. A front of war, within which there are some differences on tactics (for example, on when to attack Iran) but not on the strategy.

Armed by the US, who announces the sale (for 4 billion dollars) to Saudi Arabia of another 19 helicopters for the war in Yemen, and to Israel of another 7,400 missiles and bombs, including anti-bunkers for an attack on Iran.
