Professor Neil Ferguson has resigned from the UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE).
SAGE is a sub-committee of COBRA (Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms) responsible for national security in the United Kingdom.
Professor Ferguson has served as a British government consultant for the past 20 years. It was he who, in 2001, advised Prime Minister Tony Blair to slaughter six million head of cattle to guard against the foot and mouth disease; a measure which cost British agriculture £ 10 billion and sounded the death knell for its beef farming. Professor Ferguson has consistently prophesied calamities of all sorts, including 550,000 deaths from Covid-19 in the UK if mandatory general lockdown and social distancing were not implemented. Such measures had never been tested in any epidemic scenarios before. In France, he managed to convince President Emmanuel Macron to adopt this health emergency plan.
Professor Ferguson is not a doctor, but a statistician.
He resigned after the Daily Telegraph revealed that he allowed a friend reported to be his lover to visit him at home - in breach of the official lockdown rules he contributed to devising.
