At first, the Ukrainian government claimed to have hit the ship with a Neptune missile and produced fake photographs of its feat. However, the Russian army does not exclude the possibility of a NATO submarine strike - a US Air Force Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance and anti-submarine aircraft having been spotted not far from the site at the time of the incident.
